What causes botulism
The bacteria Clostridium Botulinum
How is Botulism transmitted?
By ingestion of botulinum toxin in contaminated food, e.g poorly pasteurised canned food ( look for bulging cans), honey and soil
What is the incubation period for botulism
Incubation period is 12-36 hours
Clinical features of botulism
Descending paralysis (Peripheral flaccid mucle paralysis), floppy baby syndrome in infants (constipation, hypotonia, poor feeding), Nausea, vomiting
Diagnosis of botulism
Diagnosis is done by identifying botulinum toxin from serum, vomit, gastric acid, stool or suspicious food.
Treatment of botulism
Treatment include securing airways, injection of horse derived botulism antitoxin or IV human botulism immunoglobulins.
