Travelling Flashcards
Average speed word equation + measurement unit
distance/time (usually in m/s)
Instantaneous speed definition
current speed at any given moment
Acceleration word equation + measurement unit
Final speed - initial speed/time (m/s^2)
Newton’s first law of motion
An object at rest will stay at rest unless acted on by an external net force. An object in motion will stay in motion at a constant speed in a straight line unless acted on by an external net force.
What does net force determine?
Whether an object will move or remain stationary. Two or more net forces acting on the same object can cancel.
Newton’s second law of motion
The acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the net force acting on it and inversely proportional to the mass.
Word equation for force + measurement unit
Force = mass x acceleration (measured in N: Newtons)
Newton’s third law of motion
For every action force, there is an equal and opposite reaction force.
How does the third law of motion work?
- Acts as a pair on 2 DIFFERENT objects
- Paired forces are of equal size/magnitude and opposite direction
- Forces do not cancel each other out even if one appears not to move
Mass definition + measurement unit
Amount of matter in an object (kg or grams)
Weight definition + measurement unit
Force of gravity acting on an object (measured in newtons)
Gravity definition
Force of attraction between two objects
Weight word equation
Weight = mass x gravity
