what is cholera?
bacterial infection transmitted through contaminated water
what is typhoid?
caused by bacteria and can be contracted from untreated sewage and food and water it contaminates. vaccination is necessary where sanitation and food hygiene is poor. doesnt provide complete protection.
what is hepatitis?
hepatitis A and B involve viruses that attack the liver and can be vaccinated against. A can be avoided by following strict food hygiene and B is contracted through bodily fluids.
rules of food hygiene when travelling
only drink bottled water for drinking and brushing teeth, try not to swallow shower water. tap water can be boiled and sterilised too.food should be freshly prepared and hot. avoid uncooked vegetables, including salads as may have been washed in unsafe water. only eat peelable fruits, avoid ice cubes,avoid locally produced ice creams and avoid mayonnaise
what is travellers diarrhoea?
caused by bacteria and classed as food poisoning. can result in severe and prolonged cases of diarrhoea
treatment of travellers diarrhoea?
ORT. loperamide should not be used.
what is malaria prophylaxis?
caused by a parasite called plasmodium and spread by the bite of an infected female. from those returning from a malaria infected region, they will need to take treatment a week before visiting and a while after returning home as can lie dormant in blood for several weeks.
questions to ask before selling malaria prevention medication
location of travel, length of visit, other medications, age of customer, epileptic, pregnant or psiarosis
malaria prevention routine
insect repellent, mosquito nets with permethrin,citronella,avoid marshes or standing water,long sleeved,loose pale clothing, avoid dawn and dusk
referral criteria for malaria
if patients fall ill within one year of returning, especially within three months, advise them to seek medical help as parasite can live in liver and blood cells for months
