protection in the sun Flashcards
what is UVA?
the majority of the suns radiation is UVA. causes special cells in the skin to produce a pigment (melanin) in an attempt to protect the skin from sun damage. UVA doesnt burn but causes damage to at a deeper level causing formation of pre-cancerous cells aswell as premature ageing.
what is UVB?
UVB can cause redness and burning as the body tries to repair damaged cells. prolonged exposure can cause blistering and 2nd degree burns. UVB causes the most damage to DNA and poses the highest risk of cancer. causes prematuring ageing, instant wrinkles, age spots and reduced elasticity of skin
short term damage of UVB and UVA exposure?
sunburn with a delayed reaction of 8-12 hours after sun exposure
long term damage of UVB and UVA?
UV light speeds the ageing process. it makes the skin rough, dry, wrinkled, loose and dull. age spots may appears and it can also damage the eyes
theory of suncreams
can protect against UVA and UVB rays.
what does SPF do?
protect against UVB. the SPF number is used to multiply the normal ‘burn time’. for example, if you burn after 10 minutes and you apply factor 15 you can stay in the sun for 150 minutes. burn time x spf = time of protection. a minimum of 25 spf for children and 15 for adults.
how to apply suncream
UVA protection is measured in stars. one being poor and five being good. apply at least 7 teaspoons 30 minutes before going into the sun and re-apply every 2-3 hours
