what is basal cell carcinoma (rodent ulder)?
most common type of skin cancer usually found in 60+ and people with scottish or irish descent. linked with working outdoors, outdoor sports and life in the tropical
what are the most likely sites for basal cell carcinoma?
face and hair-bearing skin. a nodule that grows to a diameter of 5mm in 1-2 years
appearance of basal cell carcinoma
nodules or blisters that look translucent or pigmented , and if left, will develop a raised pearly border with a non-healing ulcer in the centre. they behave differently from most cancers as they rarely spread to secondary cancers, although can damage flesh around them.
appearance of sqaumous cell carcinoma?
can take the form of scaly lumps , nodules or ulcers or non-healing sores.
whos more susceptible to developing sqaumous cell carcinoma and the cause
they occur in mainly older people with the cause being UV radiation although can be caused by substances such as tar, arsenic and petroleum derivitives.
what is melignant melanoma?
four different types. most serious type which if left untreated will spread to other organs such as the liver,bones,and brain and is fatal. can be cured early enough. non melanoma skin cancers are most common affecting 100,000 people each year and a very high cure rate. if not treated can damage flesh around them.
malignant melanomas - who they affect and what causes it?
less common (13,000) and affect men. caused by uv damage or chemical damage
appearance of malignant melanoma
start on already pigmented patch of skin either a mole or freckle.
major signs of malignant melanoma
if existing mole is getting larger or new one is growing, mole has an irregular outline (should be smooth), mole is a mixture of shaded of brown and black.
minor signs of malignant melanoma
mole is bigger than end of pencil, inflamed or has reddish edge, bleeding,oozing,crusting, itchy or painful.
where malignant melanomas develop
in women, its usually the calf and in men its typically the rear and back. among the elderly , the face may be affected. may occassionally appear on the sole of the foot or nail bed of big toe
