Cause of traumatic lesions to focal peripheral nerves
- secondary to trauma which may include fractures
- iatrogenic following surgery
- iatrogenic following poor injection technique
How can sciatic trauma be detected?
- reduced strength of withdrawal of the hindlimb below the level of the hock
How can femoral trauma be detected?
- reduce or absent patellar reflex
Femoral nerve - where does it exit the spine, what does it supply?
- L4, 5, 6
- illiopsoas, quadriceps, sartorius
Obturator nerve - where does it exit the spine, what does it supply?
- (L4), 5, 6
- external obturator, pectinous, gracilis, adductor
Cranial gluteal nerve - where does it exit the spine, what does it supply?
- L6, 7, S1
- mid + deep gluteal, tensor fascia lata
Caudal gluteal nerve - where does it exit the spine, what does it supply?
- L7, (S1, 2)
- sup + (mid) gluteal
Sciatic nerve - where does it exit the spine, what does it supply?
- L6, 7, S1, (2)
- biceps femoris, semimembranosus, semitendinosus
Tibial nerve - where does it come from, what does it supply?
- branches off the sciatic nerve
- gastrocnemius, popliteus, superficial digital flexor, deep digital flexor
Common peroneal nerve - where does it come from, what does it supply?
- branches off the sciatic nerve
- peroneus longus, anterior tibialis, lat. de, lde
Pudendal nerve - where does it exit the spine, what does it supply?
- S1, 2, 3
- external anal sphincter
Suprascapular nerve - where does it exit the spine, what does it supply?
- (C5), 6, 7
- supra-infraspinatus
Subscapular nerve - where does it exit the spine, what does it supply?
- C6, 7
- subscapularis
Musculocutaneous nerve - where does it exit the spine, what does it supply?
- C6, 7, 8
- biceps, brachial, coracobrachialis
Axillary nerve - where does it exit the spine, what does it supply?
- (C6), 7, 8
- deltoids, teres major/minor
Radial nerve - where does it exit the spine, what does it supply?
- C7, 8, T1, (2)
- triceps, extensor radi carpialis, ulnaris lat, common digital extensor, lateral digital extensor
Median nerve - where does it exit the spine, what does it supply?
- C8, T1, (2)
- flexor carpi radialis, superficial digital flexor
Ulnar nerve - where does it exit the spine, what does it supply?
- C8, T1, (2)
- flexor carpi ulnaris, deep digital flexor
