What is it?
A
- an autoimmune myopathy affecting master and temporal muscles alone

Presentation & prevalence
A
- progressive pain or inability to open the jaw
- not uncommon in practice

Diagnosis
A
- CE supported by anti-type IIM antibodies
- need to exclude temporomandibular joint pathology or other soft tissue pathology such as retrobulbar abscess

Tx
A
- extended course of corticosteroids at immunosuppressive doses
- chronic condition, if untreated may lead to scarring of muscles with restriction of jaw opening
- care with anaesthesia if can’t open jaw as may have difficulty intubating
