- Intrusion of traumatic memories
- Avoidance of stimuli internal or external
- Hypervigilance/reactivity
Defined by effects of an extreme trauma; after effects of witnessing or experiencing a traumatic event
-Recurrent, involuntary, and intrusive distressing memories of the traumatic event; intense or prolonged psychological distress
-dissociation, problems with concentration, startle effects, hypervigilance, and other intense reactions to external and interal stimulation
-Presence of 1 or more of the following intrusion symptoms; 1 or more symptoms met for either avoidance or negative alterations in cognitions or mood (worsening after events); 2 or more symptoms met for alteration in arousal and reactivity ( startle response and irritable behavior)
Duration of symptoms last for 1 month
Symptoms persist for 6 months AFTER exposure to traumatizing event
Posttraumatic stress disorder
Has similar symptoms to PTSD, BUT only last 3 days to 1 month after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event
-Presence of 9 or more of the following intrusion symptoms negative mood, dissociation, avoidance, and arousal symptoms
Acute Stress Disorder
Emotional or behavioral symptoms or distress in response to an identifiable stressor occurring within 3 months of the onset of the stressor
-symptoms don’t represent normal bereavement
Adjustment Disorder
term: persistent or recurrent experiences of feeling detached from and as if one were an outside observer of ones mental processes or body
ex: feeling as thought in a dream, time moving slowly
depresonalization
term: persistent or recurrent experiences of unreality of surroundings
ex: the world around the individual is experienced as unreal, dreamlike, distant, distorted
