Obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors with an aim to reduce the distress triggered by the obsessions
- compulsions are not connected in a realistic way to the feared event or are obviously excessive; compulsions are not done for pleasure (doesnt reduce anxiety completely)
- “must be done” mentality
- time consuming -more than an hour a day
Obsessive compulsive
Obsession with how ones body looks; preoccupation with one or more perceived defects or flaws in physical appearance that are not observable or appear slight to others
-generates at some point repetitive behaviors; mirror checking, excessive grooming, reassurance seeking or mental acts (comparing self to others)
Body dysmorphic disorder
Compulsively saving material items; persistent inability to discard items regardless of their actual value
Hoarding
term: recurrent and persistent thoughts, urges, or images that are experienced at some time during the disturbance, as intrusive and unwanted; in most individuals it causes anxiety and distress
- the individual attempts to ignore or suppress such thoughts, urges, or images to neutralize them with some other thought or action
Obsession
term: repetitive behaviors or mental acts that the individual feels driven to perform in response to an obsession or according to rules that must be applied rigidly
ex: hand washing, checking ; praying, counting, repeating words
- aimed at preventing or reducing anxiety or distress; or preventing some dreaded event or situation
