Three important features of CPTSD (distinguishing from PTSD criteria)
- problems in affect regulation
- beliefs about oneself as diminished, defeated, worthless
accompanied by feelings of guilt, shame, failure related to the traumatic event - difficulties in sustaining relationships and in feeling close to others
Corrective emotional experience
like shaming for a natural emotion - unconditional positive regard - they feel heard, seen, understood - changes everything for them.
having a normal emotional reaction to this situation is correct
like a child being troubled - when shows anger, shamed for it - confuses them - validating it, corrective emotional experience
validating based on context
DBT - has a component that mentions - in this situation, this emotion will come up

Three conditions for event to be traumatic
unexpected, shakes a ‘life given,’ helplessness
single most important sign

When someone is gaslighting you, you may second-guess yourself, your memories, recent events, and perceptions.
Lying to you, spreading rumours/gossip, trivialising your emotions - you’re overreacting, distracting by changing the topic

Three types of flashbacks
Which is most common?
imagery, feelings, memory
feelings/emotion flashbacks - most common
Complicated grief
when 6 months have passed and symptoms haven’t decreased - and other features like mistrust in life

why create two categories?
it is believed - 4 weeks from traumatic event - body/mind will try to heal itself from what happened
something called as Golden hour - The time that elapses between the traumatic event and the manifestation of the disorder
in therapy, if fresh incident, within 4 weeks, just do supportive work
wait for natural mechanism of body to heal itself
soothing practices - not thought based processing
don’t try trauma therapy - it may intervene

PTSD major symptom categories
intrusive, avoidance, negative alterations in cognitions and mood, psychological reactions and arousal
explain trauma genesis

in trauma event - nano second of thought (like an essential condition - this separates trauma from regular fear response) - I am not going to make out of here

how do neurobiological changes contribute to trauma?
scar hypothesis - depression - depressive episode - makes persona more vulnerable to future episodes - kinda like scar on brain - much lesser pain required at scar site to evoke pain
behavioral sensitisation - like how habituation happens in addiction - more substance required for same high - e.g. regulation response - need for more and more tools or action in order to calm self
like first time trigger - taking 30 minutes to calm down, next time - 40 minutes and so on
kindling - to explain mood disorder initially
first episode of mood - psychosocial factor
further may come from within only
to perpetuate or maintain the condition, it can build on its own instead of requiring a new stressor
like perceived threat thing - it stays there without the actual stressor
old stressor has kindled - new stressor not required
