What three histories must you ask with regards to trauma?
Medical

Why are heart problems important to ask about?
Endo procedures may be contra indicated in these patients
Should consult child’s paediatrician
Why are bleeding disorders important?
If tissues are damaged how you handle it and also if teeth are to be extracted
Why are allergies important?
Penicillins?
When would tetanus be requires?
If there has been soil contamination and the child has not had their booster in last 5 yrs
What questions re their dental history would you ask?
Any previous history of trauma
Any past dental experience
What trauma history questions would you ask?
When : delay in presentation NAI, prognosis for avulsed teeth Where: indicate need for tetanus How: NAI Any lost fragments? LOC/vomiting/nausea Immediate management?
What E/O signs should you look at?
- Symptoms of head injury
- Signs of shock
- Facial swelling, bruises, laceration
- Fragments stuck in lip
What i/O exam should you perform?
- Soft tissues
- Occlusion
- Tooth displacement
- Cracked teeth
- Trauma grid
What things should be included on the trauma grid?
Mobility TTP Colour Sensitvity to pharm Radiograph
What are the options for radiographic exam?
- Periapical is best for diagnosis
- Occlusal: good for root fracture and foreign body In soft tissues
- DPT: lateral oblique, lateral skull, AP skull, OM: these are good if bone thought to be involved
