Trauma and Stressor-related Disorders Flashcards
What does trauma and stressor-related disorders all share?
Proximal instigating stressful event followed by intense emotional responses.
Disorder described as exposure to a traumatic event during which an individual experiences or witnesses death or threatened death, actual or threatened serious injury, or actual or threatened sexual violation.
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
Happens when memories occur suddenly, accompanied by strong emotion, and the victims find themselves reliving the event.
Dissociative states that typically last a few seconds and rarely are of a longer duration,
during which components of the event are relived and the individual behaves as if the event were occurring at that moment
Flashback
In psychoanalytic therapy, reliving emotional trauma to relieve emotional suffering is called?
Catharsis
The content of the trauma and the emotions associated with it are worked through systematically

Duration of disturbance for PTSD
More than 1 month

addition, in response to the stressor, the individual experiences persistent or recurrent symptoms of either Depersonalization or Derealization.
With dissociative symptoms
2 types of dissociative symptoms
Depersonalization
Derealization
PTSD
Specifier described as persistent or recurrent experiences of feeling detached from, and as if one were an outside observer of, one’s mental processes or body (e.g., feeling as though one were in a dream; feeling a sense of unreality

Depersonalization
PTSD
Specifier described as persistent or recurrent experiences of unreality of surroundings (e.g., the world around the individual is experienced as unreal, dreamlike, distant, or distorted)
Derealization
PTSD
Specifier used if the full diagnostic criteria are
not met until at least 6 months after the event (although the onset and expression of some symptoms may be immediate).
With delayed expression
Duration of Acute Stress Disorder
