Electrical Shock

Pulmonary Edema
Diagnosis & Treatment

A
  • Perform thoracic radiographs if suspected
  • Treat with furosemide as a diuretic

Q

Hemothorax

On Rads

A

Fluid appears white/gray
* same density as soft tissue
* will obscure heart and diaphragm
* lungs “floating”

Q

Pulmonary Edema

A

Caused by too much fluid in the lungs
* seen with congestive heart failure in dogs

Q

Pulmonary Contusion Treatment

Hypotensive Fluid Resuscitation

A

Use of limited fluids / blood products to restore blood pressure and flow to non-essential organs
* not LRS
* use colloids, hetastarch, plasma, or hypertonic saline
* systolic BP to 90 (normal is 120)
* MAP of 60

Q

Flail Chest

A

Occurs when 2 or more adjacent ribs are fractured in 2 places
* diagnosed on site; no need for rads
* associated with pulmonary contusion and pneumothorax

Q

Typical Spinal Fractures

A

At TL Junction
* “tenting”
* inverted “V” in spine

Lower Lumbar
* less nerve injury compared to TL junction
* caudal section shifts and comes forward

16
Q

Schiff Scherrington Posture

A
  • occurs from TL junction fracture
  • straight / stiff front limps
  • no feeling or control in rear limbs
17
Q

Common abdominal organs to be damaged and cause fluid in abdomen

A
  • Liver
  • Spleen
  • Urinary bladder - if ruptured from trauma
18
Q

Fluid on Radiograph

Appearance

A

Appears white or gray

19
Q

Fluid on Ultrasound

Appearance

A

Appears black

20
Q

Hemoabdomen Treatment

A

Similar to pulmonary contusion and head trauma
* low fluid volume
* hypotensive resuscitation
* blood transfusions
* autologus transfusion - give blood back via IV

21
Q

Intestinal Trauma Signs

A
  • painful abdomen on palpation
  • vomiting
22
Q

Urinary Tract Trauma

A
  • Urethral trauma common with pelvic fractures
  • Can inject contrast to check for leaks
