Heat Stroke & Seizures Flashcards
Heat Stroke Diagnostics
- PCV / TP
- Platelets
- Coagulation panel
- Chemistry panel
- Urine production
Seizures Preparations
- IV Fluids
- Hematocrit tubes
- Blood glucose
- Injection of Valium, Phenobarbital, Pentobarbital for seizures
Where does heat exchange occur?
Respiratory Tract
* panting allows movement of cool air over MM
* evaporation of moisture
Breeds Susceptible to Heat Stroke
Brachycephalics
Which breeds present most often for heat stroke
Labs and Retrievers
Heat Stroke
Pathology
- Any organ can be affected
- Once “cooked”, there is no reversal
Heat Stroke
GI Tract Pathology Affect
GI tract always affected
* vomit
* diarrhea, often with blood
* lining of GI tract may be sloughing off
Heat Stroke
Call Screening
- Excessive panting
- Vomiting
- Bloody diarrhea
- Collapse
Heat Stroke
Treatment
- IV Fluids (Colloids)
- Oxygen (add ice cubes to mask)
- Cool water bath
- Fresh frozen plasma
- Stop cooling once temp is 103
Heat Stroke
Exam Findings
- Recumbent
- Variable temp
- Hypothermia if delayed treatment
- MM deep red - due to increased circulation to cool down
- Increased CRT
- Increased HR
- Decreased BP
They are in shock
Where to direct cool water spray
for Heat Stroke
Starting on the abdomen where there is less fur
Heat Stroke Complications
- Organ Failure
- Seizures
- DIC
DIC
Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation
Platelets
Normal Range
150k - 350/400k
Petechia
Occurrence
- Seen with DIC
- Seen once platelets <30k
Petechia
Pin point hemorrhages
* visible best on mm
* also on other areas of skin, mostly without fur
Heat Stroke Monitoring
- Temp
- BP
- PCV / TP
- Platelets
- Coagulation panel
- Urine output
Seizure
Cause
Caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain
Seizure
Phone Screening
- Swimming / paddling
- Out of it
- Foaming at mouth
- Vocal
- Breathing issues
Syncope
- Fainting or passing out
- Caused by lack of oxygen to brain
How many parts to a seizure
3
Pre-Ictal
Part 1 of seizures
* behavioral changes
Ictus
Part 2 of Seizures
* the actual seizure
Post-Ictal
Part 3 of seizures
* can last anywhere betweena few minutes to 30 minutes
* body trying to get back to normal
When to seek ER attention
Seizures
- First time seizure
- Lasts longer than 10 minutes
- Pet does not completely recover within an hour
- More than 1 seizure in 12 hours
Seizures in Cats
- Less common
- Often present with bizarre behavior - not tonic/clonic like dogs
