A

Origin: posterior iliac spine of ilium, posterior sacrum, sacroiliac ligament, aponeurosis of the erector spinae, transverse processes of T1-T3, articular processes of C4-C7, and mammillary processes of lumbar vertebrae

Insertion: spinous processes of the vertebrae 2-4 segments superior to the origin

Innervation: posterior rami of the spinal nerve

Action: stabilize and unilaterally rotate contralaterally

A

Origin: transverse processes of C4-T10

Insertion: occipital bone and spinous processes of upper thoracic and cervical vertebrae 4-6 segments superior to origin

Innervation: posterior rami of the spinal nerve

Action: rotate contralaterally and extend the head and vertebral column
