Joints, Bones, and Ligaments Flashcards
Anulus fibrosus
Ring consisting of concentric lamellae of fibrocartilage forming the circumference of the IV disc
Uncovertebral joint (of Lushka)
Located between the uncus of the bodies (uncinate processes) of the C3-C6 vertebrae and the beveled inferolateral surfaces of the vertebral bodies superior to them
Nucleus pulposus
Central core of the IV disc - nuclei are 85% water at birth
Posterior longitudinal ligament
Runs within the vertebral canal along the posterior aspect of the vertebral bodies
Anterior longitudinal ligament
Covers and connects the anterolateral aspects of the vertebral bodies and IV disc
Zygapophysial (facet) joints
Joints of the vertebral arches
Ligamenta flava
Connects lamina of adjacent vertebral arches and extend almost vertically from the lamina above to the lamina below
Interspinous ligament
Connects adjacent spinous processes
Supraspinous ligament
Merges superiorly with the nuchal ligament
Nuchal ligament
Extends from EOP and posterior border of the foramen magnum to the spinous processes of cervical vertebrae
What joint limits excessive flexion of the vertebral column?
Posterior longitudinal ligament - C2 to sacrum
What joint limits excessive extension of the vertebral column?
Anterior longitudinal ligament - C1 to sacrum
What portion of the vertebral column has uncovertable joints?
Cervical - specifically C3-C6
What part of the IV disc is innervated?
Anulus fibrosus
Atlanto-occipital joint
Occiput-C1
