Nerve Routes Flashcards
Lesser occipital nerve (C2,C3)
Supplies the skin of the neck and scalp posterosuperior to the auricle
Spinal accessory nerve (CN XI)
Passes deep to the SCM before entering the lateral cervical region at or inferior to the junction of the superior and middle thirds of the posterior border of the SCM
Greater auricular nerve (C2,C3)
Ascends vertically across the SCM onto the parotid gland, where it divides and supplies skin over the gland, posterior aspect of the auricle, and the area of skin extending from the angle of the mandible to the mastoid process
Transverse cervical nerve (C2,C3)
Supplies the skin covering the anterior cervical region - nerve curves around the middle of the posterior border of the SCM and passes anteriorly and horizontally across it deep to the EJV and platysma
Phrenic nerve (C3,C4,C5)
Lies anterior on the anterior scalene muscles and crosses anterior to the second part of the subclavian artery
External jugular vein
Begins near the angle of the mandible by the union of the posterior division of the retromandibular vein with the posterior auricular vein
Suprascapular artery
Passes inferolaterally across the anterior scalene muscle and phrenic nerve and crosses the subclavian artery and the cords of the brachial plexus
Supraclavicular nerve (C3,C4)
Emerges as a common trunk under cover of the SCM and send small branches to the skin of the neck cross the clavicle to supply the skin over the shoulder
Transverse cervical artery
Supplies the trapezius and is oriented in the posterior cervical triangle
Dorsal scapular artery
Supplies the rhomboids and levator scapulae
Dorsal scapular bundle
Dorsal scapular vein, artery, and nerve - Supplies the rhomboids and levator scapulae
