Transports In Plants Flashcards
What is the relationship between the size of an organism and SA:V ratio
As something gets bigger the SA: V ratio decreases
Why do larger multicellular organism require transport systems
They have a small SA: V ratio and diffusion is no longer efficient
Xylem
Transpiration system
Water and minerals
Transports substances up the stem from the roots
Phloem
Translocation system
Sugars and amino acids
Leaves -> stem -> stored as starch
Leaves -> growing tissues ->respiration
Xylem structure
Made up of dead cells
Continuous tube
Thick walls made of lignin the help strengthen plant
Phloem structure
Made up of living cells
Cell walls have holes called sieve plates
Transpiration
Loss of water from a plant
^ light intensity ^ transpiration up until a point
^ light ^ photo
Stomata open for CO2 to move in so water is also lost
^ temp ^ transpiration
^ temp ^ evaporation from surface of leaf because water has more KE
^ wind speed ^ transpiration
^ wind moves H2O vapor away from outside of leaf
Dec WP ^ WP gradient so more water is also lost
^ humidity dec transpiration
^ hum ^ moisture in air ^ WP outside of leaf dec WP gradient so less water is lost
Osmosis
The net movement of water from an area of higher water potential to an area of lower water potential across a partially permeable membrane
Hypotonic solution
Turgid
Water moves in by osmosis
High water potential
Hypertonic solution
Flaccid
Water moves out by osmosis
Low water potential
