Q

What effect does carbon monoxide have

A

CO binds to haemaglobin in RBC irreversibly instead of O2 . Heart rate increases because it has to pump more blood to get the same amount of oxygen around the body. Leads to increased blood pressure and heart disease

Q

What is emphysema

A

Smoking damages lining of walls of the alveoli and decreases the SA for gas exchange. This means less oxygen absorbed so can cause wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, chest infections
