transportation, deposition of coastal sediment Flashcards
recieves sediments in 3 ways…
rivers
eorsion of the coast itsself
material moved to the coastline from the sea bed
movmeent of sediment up and down the ebach
swash= up
backwash=down
movement of sediment
waves carry sediment and arrive at an angle at the beach depenant upon wind direction and wave refraction (LSD)
swash and backwash opporate in a zigzag movement, overall effect being material moves along the beach.
groynes interfear with the movmeebt by longhsore drift,
types of sediment
cobbles, pebbles, shingle, sand , mud
deposition of coastal sediment
happens on the updrift of a groyne or in sheltered locations such as a bay
also occours where the coastline changes shape abruptly
sewdiment cells
coastlines divided up into sediment cells with smaller sub-cells imbertween them
sediment is self contained within them with acceptions of suspended finer material
within each cell there is imputs of sediment and most is loved by lsd or tidal currewnts so
boundries are marked by headlands and esturies
direction of sediment movement may change dependant upon the fetch anf the seasons and the direction of the prevailing winds
sediment cell- outputs
sediment cannot cross the cell boundires, only be lost out to sea
tidal currents surge up estries and surge out again when the tide falls.
they can carry large amounts of sediment and remove large amounts of silt and mud as these can be suspended within the water.
