Transportation Flashcards
Diffusion
The net movement of molecules down a concentrated gradient from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. (Tea Bag).
Facilitated Diffusion
The passive transport of of large water-soluble molecules or ions across the plasma membrane by protein channel and carrier proteins.
Osmosis
the net diffusion of water. Water moves across semi-permeable membrane from an area of low concentration.
Active Transport
The movement ions or molecule across a semi-permeable membrane across a semi permeable membrane from an area of low concentration to an are of high concentration Uses ATP to move molecules or ions.
Osmosis
The net diffusion of water. Water moves across semi-permeable membrane from an area of high concentration to low concentration.
Isotonic
Equal in and out
Hypertonic
Surrounding solution is higher concentration.
Hypotonic
Surrounding solution is lower concentration
Carrier proteins
Bind to specific molecules on one side of the plasma membrane, change shape and release the substance on the other side.
Channel proteins
Form narrow passageways through which small ions can diffuse rapidly from a high ion concentration to a lower ion concentration.
Equilibrium
The point at which particles are distributed evenly throughout a system, they move at equal rates in all directions.
