Homeotasis Flashcards
What needs to be balanced?
Water, temperature, blood glucose concentration and iron content.
Removing waste products
The kidneys respond to high levels of water in the blood plasma by reproducing a larger volume of urine which is also more dilute.
Kidneys
They filter out small molecules from the blood, water, salts, glucose and urea. They take it out but put back the glucose and re - absorb as much water and salt needed, which makes up urine.
Blood glucose
The pancreas produce a hormone called insulin, which causes glucose to move from the blood cells, this is done when blood glucose concentration is too high.
Negative feedback
The body senses a change in a variable and activates mechanisms to reverse the changes so that internal conditions within the body are maintained within narrow limits. Eg. Lowering heart rate.
Positive feedback
When a change of stimulus occurs, a response that changes the variable even more in the same direction eg. contractions in pregnancy.
Hypoglycemia
A state in which the blood glucose level drops below the set point.
Glucagon
A hormone formed in the pancreas that promotes the breakdown of glycogen to glucose in the liver
Antidiuretic
Affects how much water is reabsorbed into the collecting tubules in the kidneys.
