Cells Flashcards
Prokaryotic cells
They don’t have a nuclear membrane or mitochondria.
Complex, circular.
Eukaryotic cells
They have a nuclear membrane. Simple, linear.
Nucleus
Contains the genetic material. And controls all cell activity by regulating what proteins are made.
Ribosomes
Site of protein synthesis.
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Rough and smooth. A pathway through the cytoplasm. It acts as a work station for ribosomes.
Golgi body
Responsible for final check on proteins before they are sent out.
Mitochondria
Energy source.
Vacuole
Found in Plants and Animals. Stores enzymes and waster products. Bigger in plants than animals.
Cytosol
Liquid part of the cell.
Lysosomes
They are responsible for the breakdown and absorption of materials taken in by the cell.
Plasma membrane
Controls what comes in and out of the cell.
Cytoplasm
Everything between the cell membrane and the nuclear membrane.
Chloroplasts
Only in plant cells. Involved in photosynthesis.
Cell wall
Only in plants. Protects the cell.
Polar heads
Outside, water loving.
Non - Polar tails
Inside, water fearing.
Carrier Protein
A protein within membranes that assist other molecules to cross the membrane in facilitated or active transport.
Receptor Protein
A protein that binds hormones and other signal molecules together.
Transport Protein
A protein that carries molecules across membrane.
Turgid
Describes a cell that is tight and rigid from absorbing water.
Selectively Permeable
Describes a membrane that allows some substances to pass but not others.
