Transport via membrane Flashcards
what is passive transport (simple diffusion)
- The net passive movement of a substance from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration until an equilibrium is reached.
- Requires no energy input
What is Passive transport (Facilitated diffusion)
- The passive net movement of a substance from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration with the assistance of a carrier or channel protein.
- Requires no energy input.
what is Passive transport (Osmosis):
- The passive net movement of free water molecules from a region of high water concentration to a region of low water concentration (low solute to high solute)
Requires no energy input
what happens when a cell is in a hypotonic solution?
the extracellular solution has a lower solute concentration that that of the cells internal environment. Water will move into the cell and it will expand.
what happens when a cell is in an isotonic solution?
the intracellular and extracellular environment is equal in solute concentration
what will happen when a cell is in a hypertonic solution?
the extracellular solution has a higher solute concentration than the cells internal environment. Water will move out of the cell and it will shrink.
what is active transport?
- The net movement of a substance from a region of low concentration to a region of high concentration (against the concentration gradient), using a protein carrier.
- Energy is required in the form of ATP
what is Active transport (bulk transport):
- Movement of large particles (or a large number of small particles) into or out of a cell without directly crossing the membrane using vesicles.
Requires energy in the form
against the concentration gradient
what are the three steps of exocytosis?
1- Vesicular transport
2- Fusion
3- Release
what are the three stages of endocytosis?
1- Fold
2- Trap
3- Bud
