Cell types Flashcards
1
Q
What are the characteristics of Prokaryotes?
A
- Single celled
- Do not contain membrane bound organelles (chloroplasts, mitochondria)
- Contain one circular DNA chromosome located in a generalised region called the nucleoid
- Replicate via binary fission
- smaller
Examples include: Bacteria, archaea
2
Q
What are the characteristics of Eukaryotes?
A
- Single celled or multicellular
- Contain membrane bound organelles
- replicate via mitosis + meiosis
- Larger
Examples include: Fungi, plant and animal
3
Q
Does an animal cell have a cell wall + chloroplast?
A
no
4
Q
What does the mitochondria do
A
site of cellular respiration to create energy for the cell in the form of ATP
5
Q
what does the chloroplast do
A
site of photosynthesis
6
Q
what are the two types of endoplasmic reticulum and what do they both do?
A
Smooth- synthesizes and transports lipids
rough- transports proteins in vesicles to the Golgi apparatus
