Transport Systems: Plants Flashcards
Name plant organs
roots, stem and leaves
Name the 2 types of plant vessels
Xylem
Phloem
Traits of Xylem Vessel:
transports water and minerals
Carries substances upwards
Made of dead cells
Supports to plants w/ lignen rings
Traits of Phloem vessel:
Transport sugars
Carries substances up and down
made of living cells
has sieve plates and companion cells
What does spongy mesophyl do?
they are loosely packed cells w/ large air spaces for CO2 and O2 to circulate
What do guard cells do?
control opening and closing of stomata
what does the stoma do?
allows gas exchange and water loss
what does a leaf vein do?
holds xylem and phloem
What does palisade mesophyl do?
contain lots of chloroplasts and receive most light
- main site of photosynthesis
How does water exit a leaf
water and minerals enter the plant through root hairs and move up the xylem vessels in a leaf vein
goes to spongy mesophyll
evaporates through stomata
What can water be used for?
photosynthesis or lost through transpiration
What is transpiration
the loss of water from the leaves of a plant through the stoma
how can transpiration be measured?
through a bubble potometre
What factors can affect transpiration
temperature
wind speed
surface area
humidity
How does water travel from soil to leaves
enters root hair cells along a concentration gradient
