Transport In Plants Flashcards
How do root hair cells take in minerals and water?
They have hairs that stick into the soil these give the plant a big surface area so they can absorb water and mineral ions. Minerals are absorbed by active transport as soil is low concentration and cell is high , but water is osmosis.
How do phloem tubes transport food?
They have small pores to allow things to flow through in elongated cells in columns , sucrose made in the leaves are transported to the rest of the plant for immediate use. This is called translocation .
How does the xylem tube take water up?
As xylem is all dead cells with a hole down the middle , lignin has to hold them together. Carries water and mineral ions from the roots to the stem and leaves . This is called transpiration stream
What is transpiration and what happens during it?
It is the evaporation and diffusion of water from a plants diffusion , mostly happens in leaves
Causes a shortage , by this is replaced by water from ground and xylem
This means there is a constant transpiration stream of water occurring
It also carries mineral ions dissolved
