Stomata And Transpiration Flashcards
What are stomata?
They are tiny pores on plant, allow CO2 and o2 to diffusion in and out , also allow water vapour to escape during transpiration
What is transpiration a side effect of?
Of the way leaves do photosynthesis, more water inside plant then in air outside , the water escapes from the stomata by diffusion
What happens to the stomata when the guard cells are turgid or flaccid?
The stomata are open when turgid guard cells,
The stomata are closed when flaccid Guard cells
How does light intensity affect transpiration?
The brighter means more transpiration rate as stomata closed in dark , photosynthesis not in dark .
How does temperature affect transpiration rates?
The warmer the faster transpiration , when warmer water has more energy to evaporate and diffuse out of the stomata
How does air flow affect transposition rate?
Better air flow means more transpiration as the water moves around leaf quickly , and it is swept away.
How do you estimate transpiration rate?
Use a potometer and then record the starting position
Then start a stopwatch and record the distance moved by the bubble per unit.
You can calculate the speed of air bubble movement gives an estimate of the transpiration rate.
What does a photometer estimate?
Light intensity
Temperature
Air flow
But to get an accurate recording you must not change one variable at a time
