TRANSPORT ACROSS CELL MEMBRANES Flashcards
State what the cell membrane is made out off
Phospholipids and Proteins
Whats Special about the cell membrane
The cell membrane is selectively permeable meaning only substances such as water, co2 and oxygen can pass through it freely
State what diffusion is
Diffusion is the a passive movement of substances moving from and area of high concentration to and area of low concentration (down the concentration gradient)
What is osmosis
Movement across the cell membrane from and area of low water concentration to an area of high water concentration
Osmosis in animal cells-state what happens when a cell is placed in a HWC compared to its contents
the cell will gain water by osmosis and burst
Osmosis in animal cells-state what happens when a cell is placed in a LWC compared to its contents
the cell will lose water by osmosis and shrink
Osmosis in plant cells-state what happens to a plant cell placed in a HWC compared to its contents
The cell will gain water by osmosis, swell up and become turgid
Osmosis in plant cells-state what happens to a plant cell placed in a LWC compared to its contents
the cells will lose water by osmosis and become plasmolysed
State what active transport is
The movement of a substance from an area of Low concentration to an area of high Concentration against the concentration gradient
What does active transport require
energy (ATP)
