CELL DIVISION Flashcards
What does diploid mean
A cell that contains 2 sets of chromosones
What is specialition
When cells become specialised to perform a specific function
State the organisation of cells
cells-tissues-organs-systems
What are STEM cells
STEM cells are UNSPECIALISED cells that can be found in embryoes or adult tissue cells
What is a chromosone complement
The number of chromosones in a typical cell of an organisim
what is a chromosone
A structure made of DNA that codes codes for characteristics in an organism
State the stages of mitosis
1-chromsones condense and shorten creating a pair of chromatids
2-the nuclear membrane breaks down
3-spindle fibres attach themeselves to the centromere and line them up in the equator of the cell
4-spindle fibres contarct and pull the sister chromatids apart towards the opposite poles of the cell
5-chromatids now formed chromosones
What is cell division
1-division of the chromosones in the nucleaus
2-division of the cytoplasum
What does mitosis do
maintains the dipliod chromosone complement ensuring it has all the genes in order to function correctly
