CONTROL AND COMMUNICATION Flashcards
What does the medulla do
controls breathing and heart rate
What does the cerebellum do
Balance and control
What does the cerebrum do
consious thought and memory
what are the key parts of the Central nervous system
Spine and the brain
What is a neuron
specialised cells to carry out rapid communication within the body
what are the 3 types of neurons
sensory-touch
inter-register
motor-movement
What is the reflex arc
semsory-inter-motor
Stages of the reflex arc
1-hand on hot plates signals senory neurons which stimulates pain receptor where an electrical impulse is sent
2-chemicals release at the end of the neurons which causes electrical impulse transported across inter neuron
3-this happens again along the motor neuron causing a trigger response and the muscle contracts
what is a synapse
space between neuron when an electrical impulse reaches its neuron chemicals are the released
where are hormones released from
endocrine glands
what are hormones
chemical messangers released into blood stream
what are target tissues
hormones are specific to target tissues for example insulin to pancreas
what is special about hormones
they are specific
what happens when blood sugar is high
isulin is released by the pancreas which the travels to the liver where glucose is changed into glycogen which is stored and kept
when blood sugar is low
this is sensed by the pancreas which produces glucagon which signals the liver to change glycogen back to glucose to be brought back into the blood
