Transport Flashcards
What is uniport transport?
A process where one molecule is transported in one direction
What is symport transport?
A process where two molecules are transported in one direction.
What is antiport transport?
A process where two molecules are transported in different directions.
What is simple diffusion?
The unassisted movement of a solute from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
What is facilitated diffusion?
A passive process where a protein acts to facilitate the movement of a molecule across a membrane
What is active transport?
A transport process that moves molecules against a concentration gradient using up energy
What is the most basic role of a membrane?
To delineate a cell from its environment
What are the six general features of all membranes?
Sheet like structures, composed of a lipid and a protein, lipids have polar and non polar ends, lipids are held together by non-covalent interactions, membranes are asymmetric and proteins mediate may of the specific functions of membranes
Why do phospholipids spontaneously form bilayers in aqueous solutions?
Due to their amphipathic nature the polar head will associate with the polar water molecules and the non polar fatty acid groups will associate with each other.
What are the three main types of membrane proteins?
Peripheral proteins, integral proteins and membrane anchored
