Catabolism Review Flashcards
1
Q
What are the five key pathways of catabolism?
A
Glycolysis, TCA cycle, glycogen & starch breakdown, fatty acid metabolism and amino acid metabolism.
2
Q
What are the three stages of metabolism?
A
Breakdown of large molecules into small ones (digestion), small molecules are broken into intermediates of metabolic pathways, ATP is produced from the complete oxidation of acetyl CoA through the TCA cycle and oxidative phosphorylation.
3
Q
What is catabolism applicable to?
A
All aerobic organisms.
4
Q
What is the ATP yield of NADH and FADH2
A
NADH = 2.5ATP, FADH2 = 1.5ATP
5
Q
What is the yield and breakdown of ATP produced from one glucose in glycolysis and TCA cycle?
A
32 ATP
2 ATP 2 NADH (glycolysis) = 5 ATP 8 NADH = 20 ATP 2 FADH2 = 3 ATP 2 GTP = 2 ATP
