Transport Flashcards
What is diffusion?
Movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
It continues until an equilibrium is reached
What are the factors that increase diffusion?
Temperature
Surface area
Concentration gradient
How does concentration gradient increase diffusion?
The larger the concentration gradient the more the particles in the crowded area would want to get to the less busy area
How does temperature increase diffusion?
It means the particles move around quicker.making diffusion take place more rapidly.
How does surface are increase diffusion
It allows absorption to happen quickly and effectively. Gives more space for particles to pass through.
What is isotonic?
The concentration of solutes in the solution outside the cell is the same as the internal concentration.
What is hypertonic?
If the concentration of solutes in the solution outside the cell is higher than the internal concentration.
What is Hypotonic
If the concentration of solutes in the solution outside the cell is lower than the internal concentration
Plasmolysis
If more water is lost by osmosis, the vacuole and cytoplasm shrink and eventually the cell membrane pulls away from the cell wall.
What is osmosis
a process by which molecules of a solvent tend to pass through a partially permeable membrane from a less concentrated solution into a more concentrated one.
What is active transport?
Active transport moves substances from a more dilute solution to a more concentrated solution (against a concentration gradient
