Health and disease Flashcards
What are the four pathogens?
There are four microbes we can get and illness from they are virus, bacteria, fungi and protozoa
Who is ignaz semmelweiz and what did he do
Ignaz Semmelweis worked as a doctor in the mid 1850s many woman died in his hospital after childbirth however he realised this was because his medical students went straight from handling dead bodies to delivering babies. So he got his students to wash their hands and the death rate went straight down.
What are the symptoms of measles and how is it spread
Symptoms of measles are a fever and a red skin rash.
The virus is spread by the inhalation of droplets from coughs and sneezes and is very infectious.
Measles is a serious disease that can cause blindness and brains damage
There is no treatment so if someone becomes infected they need to be isolated to stop the spread of the virus.
Gonorrhoea is a SDI that is transported from one person to another when one has unprotected sex with and infected person
What is gonorrhoea
How is malaria spread
Protist reproduce sexually in the mosquito and asexually in the human body. They act as vectors of the disease. The female mosquito needs two meals of human blood before she can lay her eggs. And this is when the protists are passed into the human bloodstream They travel around the body in the circulatory system. And affect the liver and damage red blood cells.
How does the respiratory system protect itself
Nose hairs and mucus
How does the digestive system protect itself
The stomach produces acid and this destroys the microorganisms in the mucus you swallow as well as the majority of the pathogens you take in through your mouth in your food and drink.
How does skin protect
Acts as a barrier platelets form when you are cut to from a scab. Prevents infections and stops you from bleeding out.
