Transport Flashcards
Role of transport system
- provide ACCESS to land/facilities
- provide for MOVEMENT between locations
- problems arise when these two conflict
Transport and Land use interaction
- TS change
- Accessibility change
- Land Value Change
- Land Use (or AS) change
- traffic generation change
- TS Performance Change
businesses that rely on high accessibility
- retailers of bulky and/or heavy goods
- likely to cluster along ‘main roads’
businesses that benefit from low traffic flow
- residents and shopping environment
- might prefer to locate on streets where priority is given to cyclists and pedestrians
Travel demand prediction typically involves four steps
- estimating future trip generation
- estimating future trip distribution
- estimating future mode choice
- estimating future route choice
Trip generation
depends on nature and intensity of land use
- for residential each household produces/attracts about 10 car trips/day on average
- for commercial and military activities, production/attraction depends mainly on number of employees
Trip distribution
depends on spatial distribution of residential, commercial, military users
- how many people will live, work and shop in Burnham?
- how many people will live at Burnham, but work/shop elsewhere?
- how many people will live elsewhere, but work/shop at Burnham?
Mode choice
depends on relative attractiveness (time, cost convenience) of alternative modes
- do for each trip type
- can influence mode choice via interventions to alter relative attractiveness of alternative modes
Route choice
depends on relative attractiveness (time, distance, cost, convenience) of alternative routes
- do for each trip type and mode
- can influence route choice via interventions to alter relative attractiveness of alternative routes
