transpiration Flashcards
define transpiration
the loss of water from the plant
what is transpiration caused by
the evaporation and diffusion of water from the plants surface
where does transpiration take place
the leaves
name the 4 things that affect the rate of transpiration
- light intensity
- temperature
- air flow
- humidity
how does light intensity affect transpiration
brighter light=greater rate of transpiration
-stomata begin to close when it is dark
how does temperature affect transpiration
warmer=greater rate
-water particles have more energy to evaporate and diffuse out of the stomata
how does the air flow affect transpiration
better air flow=greater transpiration rate
-water vapour is swept away, low conc of water, diffusion is quicker
how does humidity affect transpiration
drier air=greater rate
-quicker diffusion because really high conc in one place and really low conc in another
what can be used to estimate transpiration rate
photometer, water uptake=water loss
- record distance moved by the bubble per unit
- keep condition constant
