endocrine system Flashcards
pituitary gland
- master gland
- directs other glands to release hormones
ovaries
oestrogen
testes
testosterone–sperm production
thyroid
- thyroxin which regulates
- rate of metabolism
- heart rate
- temp
adrenal gland
adrenaline, fight or flight
pancreas
insulin, regulate blood glucose levels
describe the effects of nerves
- fast
- short
- precise area
describe hormones
- slower action
- longer time
- general
describe what happens when blood glucose levels are too high
- insulin is secreted by the pancreas and it enters the blood
- glucose moves from the blood to liver or muscle cells
- insulin makes the liver turn glucose into glycogen
what happens when blood glucose levels are too low
glucagon is secreted by the pancreas into the blood
glucagon triggers the lever to convert glycogen back to glucose
when does diabetes occur
when glucose levels remain too high
Type 1 diabetes
when the pancreas fails to produce enough insulin
what are the symptoms of Type 1
thirst, blindness, glucose in urine
what is the treatment for type 1
- insulin injections
- low carbohydrate diet
- exercise
cause of type 2 diabetes
- overweight
- body stops responding to insulin
