standard precautions
when handling blood, bodily fluid/tissues, open areas of skin, must use personal protective equipment- gloves, gown, mask, goggles and use hand hygiene
contact precautions
hand washing, alcohol rub is acceptable, gown and gloves required, patient equipment is not shared
contact plus precautions
alcohol rub is not acceptable, hand washing only, gloves and gowns required, patient equipment is not shared, thorough disinfectant procedure after with bleach
droplet precautions
for containing spread of droplets >5 microns, patient isolated in private room, surgical ear loop mask and gown is required, also for patient if they leave the room
airborne precautions
patient in negative pressure room, an N95 mask or a PAPR required, patients must use a surgical tie mask when leaving the room
reverse (protective isolation)
a method to prevent immunocompromised patients from contracting or becoming contaminated. individuals entering the room wear a surgical mask, gloves and a gown
