Transitional Attack SOP Flashcards

1
Q

It was widely accepted and taught that attacking a fire from the outside may

A

Traditionally, it has also been taught that fire should almost exclusively be fought from

A

The front door or from the unburdened side

Q

What did the national institute of standards and technology and underwriters laboratories discover regarding the movement of fire and combustion gases when water is introduced correctly?

A

When water is correctly introduced into the fire from the outside, it did not push any fire or superheated gases

Q

When water is correctly introduced from the fire from the outside what effect did it have on interior conditions?

A

It produced a dramatic cooling in almost every other space in the building- even far from the stream.

Q

When water is correctly introduced from the exterior of a structure does it have an effect on survivability for victims? How so?

A

Yes. By producing a dramatic cooling effect in almost every space- including far from the stream

8
Q

What impact does Transitional attack have on fire growth and interior temperature?

A

Transitional attacking slows down Fire growth and lowers internal temperature

9
Q

After transitional attack is complete, what next step is critical in controlling the fire?

10
Q

Why is it vital to control the fire as soon as possible?

Q

Conditions that may warrant a transitional attack

A

A. Significant fire venting from an opening such as door or window
B. fire companies have not made entry
C. Significant heat from fire will endanger SAFD personnel making an immediate entry
D. There will be a delay in attacking the fire- such as forcible entry challenge or fire showing in 2nd or 3rd floor

16
Q

What is the procedure order for transitional attack?

A

A. Prior to entry officer identifies conditions appropriate for transitional attack
B. Personnel prepare hose line and ensure only straight or solid stream used
C. Officer announces benchmark “we are resetting the fire”. This tells all personnel that a transitional attack is underway
D. Apply stream to opening and aim towards ceiling. Keeping stream steady and not moving. Shut down stream after 20-40 seconds, but not more than 45 seconds
E. Announce completion with benchmark “reset complete”
F. Make rapid interior advance.

17
Q

What type of stream should be used for transitional attack and why?

A

Solid or straight. Inserting air into stream can negatively impact interior conditions by causing pressure changes and temporarily altering the flow path of the fire.

18
Q

Should the opening used for transitional attack be sealed? Why?

A

No. It would reduce ability of steam and gas to escape opening and force them to travel through the structure.

19
Q

Moving the nozzle in a “z” or circle motion essentially turns it into what?

A

A fog nozzle

20
Q

How long should a stream operate during a transitional attack?

A

20-40 seconds and no more than 45 seconds
