Fireground Terminology Flashcards
What is the manageable units of control?
3-7 with a preference of no more than 5 for any given supervisor
What is the span of control for the SAFD?
3-7 with an ideal maximum of no more than 5
Incidents will be divided into subdivisions by ————. And managed by a what?
Geography and/or function. Supervisor
How should companies working under the supervisor of a subdivision communicate and why?
Face-to-face as much as possible to limit radio transmissions with command.
———— is used when a unit, or units, is assigned to an area of the foreground without reference to the tasks that need to be accomplished.
Geography
When serving as the division supervisor the company will be referred to as what, instead of their regular unit designation?
Division
As a general rule, what is not specified when assigning divisions because when assigned a division the supervisor is responsible for all activities within the division?
Tasks or assignments
What based assignments are used for specialization within the fireground?
Function based
Can a group be only one company?
No
A ——— is responsible for the specific task on the entire fireground that they were assigned by command.
Group
Can divisions be further divided into smaller pieces to complete critical tasks that must occur within that division?
Yes. Ex “division 2 attack”
How long does a group keep their name designation?
Until relieved by another supervisor, reassigned or released.
What are designations that combine a specific location with a specific function referred to?
Combination assignments
When given an assignment, do units have to assume the identity of their designation?
Yes. Ex P38 assigned ventilation. P38 is now “ventilation”
When groups assume the title of their designation, what does this help to reduce?
Confusion, redundancy and free-lancing
Groups are a ———— designation. Such as: search group, ventilation group, attack group, etc….
Functional
Divisions are a ———— designation. Such as: Charlie division, delta division, division 1, etc….
Geographical
Ways to designate geographic location for elevation above and below ground.
Division is above ground level and sub is below ground level. Ex: division 1, division 2, sub 1, sub 2
Geographic ways to divide incident horizontally.
Alpha, bravo, Charlie, delta. And corners. Ex:alpha/bravo corner
Ways to further subdivide divisions horizontally.
Quadrants. Ex: alpha/bravo quadrant, alpha/delta quadrant would be the front left half of structure and front right half of structure
Use discretion when ————. Limit transmissions to what is necessary for effective operations.
Communicating over the radio.
Is it appropriate to use the term “sector”?
No. Never use “sector”
Use —— communication whenever possible when working within a group or division.
Face-to-face
Is it okay for a supervisor to refer to himself as “command” of a group or division?
No. Do not use he word command when referring to your division
What is the order model?
Repeat orders back to the IC
What benefit does reporting benchmarks to command via radio provide?
Let’s IC know the assignment was complete, you’re available for reassignment and creates an audio record of how the incident developed and was handled.
“All clear”
Primary or secondary searches completed
“Fire knocked down”
When fire has been mostly extinguished but is not necessarily out
“Fire under control”
When the fire is no longer aggressively spreading, but has been confined, contained, and controlled.
“Back-up in place”
When a back-up line has been extended and is protecting interior crew
Are back-up lines a secondary attack line?
No. It is to protect the interior operating units.
“Ventilation commencing”
When ventilation has begun(it is never really finished)
What text written by skip coleman is recommended to read the last couple of pages?
