transition metals Flashcards
Where are transition metals located?
In the middle of the periodic table between groups 2 and 3
Transition metals are all
metals
examples of transition metals
many common metals (chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), cobalt (Co), Nickel (Ni) and copper (Cu)
Similarities between alkali metals and transition metals
- thermal conductor
- electrical conductor
- react with non-metals to form ionic compounds
- shiny when polished
Differences between alkali and transition metals
Group 1
- extremely reactive
- extremely soft/ can be cut by a knife
Transition
- less reactive/unreactive
- transition metals may display catalytic behaviour. They increase the rate of reaction.
- high melting points and boiling points
- they have very high densities/ relatively hard
- In solution, transition metal compounds display colour
- Transition metals can serve as a catalyst
