transient global amnesia is defined as:
how long does it last?
transient loss of memory due to recent events and difficulty retaining new information (anterograde memory)
lasts <24 hrs (usually 1-10 hrs)
presentation of transient global amnesia
pts are disoriented to time or place. Anxious and upset and may ask questions about where they are and why there are there.
They have self awareness, language and motor and social skills which are preserved and neuro exam is normal.
what causes transient global amnesia
stress, exertion, changes in body temperature and valsalva maneuver and recent procedures.
risk factors for transient global amnesia
history of migraines and age>50 yrs
initial management of transient global amnesia
focus on excluding other diagnoses like toxic metabolic encephalopathy, stroke and seizures.
reoccurrence rate of transient global amnesia
doesn’t happen and so there’s no treatment or driving restriction needed.
Depersonalization-derealization disorder is marked by:
detachment of oneself to one’s surrounding rather than memory loss
Dissociative amnesia presents as a loss of autobiographical memory.
difficulty gaining new information and making new memories
anterograde amnesia
difficulty recalling past events
retrograde amnesia.
disassociative amnesia
inability to recall autobiographical information about oneself.
