causes of hyperhidrosis

A
idiopathic (primary hyperhidrosis)
ETOH abuse and opioid withdrawal
endocrine: hyperthyroidism
diabetes/ hypoglycemia, menopause
medications: antidepressants, insulin/oral hypoglycemics, SERMs and niacin

hyperhidrosis manifestations

A

excessive nonthermoregulatory sweating
axillae, face, palms and soles
impairment of daily activity, occupational function and emotional wellbeing

treatment of hyperhidrosis

A

topical aluminum chloride solution applied at night
iontophoresis (palms, soles)– this is application of electrical current in a device that contains tap water
botulism toxin

anticholinergic effects are associated with more side effects

with primary hyperhidrosis when do these cases present?

A

symptomatic before age 25 yrs and pts have a family history of similar symptoms.

These are not the same as night sweats as this happens during the day
