hyperhidrosis is
excessive sweating beyond what is needed for normal thermoregulation
causes of hyperhidrosis
idiopathic (primary hyperhidrosis) ETOH abuse and opioid withdrawal endocrine: hyperthyroidism diabetes/ hypoglycemia, menopause medications: antidepressants, insulin/oral hypoglycemics, SERMs and niacin
hyperhidrosis manifestations
excessive nonthermoregulatory sweating
axillae, face, palms and soles
impairment of daily activity, occupational function and emotional wellbeing
treatment of hyperhidrosis
topical aluminum chloride solution applied at night
iontophoresis (palms, soles)– this is application of electrical current in a device that contains tap water
botulism toxin
anticholinergic effects are associated with more side effects
with primary hyperhidrosis when do these cases present?
symptomatic before age 25 yrs and pts have a family history of similar symptoms.
These are not the same as night sweats as this happens during the day
