Gender Identity
Individuals sense of being male, female, both, or neither
Transgender
Adjective used when an individuals birth does not correspond to their gender expression or identity
Male to female: trans woman
Female to male: trans man
Gender expression
Associated with ones physical presentation, communication patterns, and behavior used to express aspects of gender identity or role
Medical Transition
Includes
sex hormones (estrogen or testosterone, no change in physical sex structures)
gender affirmation surgeries (surgery to change or alter physical sex structure to match gender identity)
other body modifications
Health care concerns
Lack of provider knowledge (50% had to teach providers)
Negative experiences in healthcare (refusal of care, harassment, discrimination)
41% of adults make a suicide attempt
Be aware of pronouns (don’t be afraid to ask)
Be aware that their chart may be under a different name or gender, but use their preferred name and pronouns
Gender Affirming Care
Assess for gender dysphoria
Treatment occurs through gender-affirming interventions
Steps taken to align social and physical gender presentations and characteristics with ones true gender identity
