First Trimester
Discomforts of pregnancy (N/V, urination, etc.)
Increased sleep needs (8hr per night)
Exercise is fine as long as client can converse during
Work: no exposure to hazardous chemicals or toxins
No medication, no alcohol/drugs, no smoking
Second Semester
Sexual needs and desires (communication between parents)
Regular dental check up (but no X-rays)
Third Trimester
Childbirth and breastfeeding classes
Increased urinary frequency and dyspnea
Choose a pediatrician and clinic
Nutritional needs (this is a time of rapid fetal growth)
Teach signs and symptoms of preterm labor, pre-eclampsia
Nutrition
Increase intake by 300 calories above basal and activity needs
Increase protein by 30 gm a day
Increase iron to 30 mg/day, folic acid to 800-1000 mcg/day through diet and supplement
Increase intake of Vitamin A and C and Calcium
Weight Gain
2-4 lbs in first trimester
0.9 lbs per week after
Total weight gain 25-35 lbs
Substance Abuse
Smoking: low birth weight infant
Alcohol: fetal alcohol syndrome
Cocaine: preterm labor and abruptio placenta
Teratogenic effects highest in first term
