How can a coach ensure a successful transfer of skills?
A
Step 1
- Make performer aware of transfer potential
- Highlight elements of skill that are similar
- Identify elements that may hinder learning
Step 2
- Ensure new task is well learnt by practising
- Plan for progression when learning new skill using practice sessions that are relevant/realistic to the competition eg against opposition or a set time
Step 3
- Eliminate bad habits and ensure performer is well motivated and has confidence

What are the considerations for whole practice?
A
- Depends of safety/time, use if safe to do so and no chance of injury, or if short of time
- Can’t target specific weaknesses
- Depends on fitness, use if the performer is fit enough to manage repeating skill, otherwise it can lead to injury
- Depends on motivation, use if performer is highly motivated otherwise it can lead to information overload
- Where you need to aid consistency and link sub-routines in full
