Transfer from bed to wheelchair

Supplies:

-Gloves
-Transfer belt
-Wheelchair

Question 2

Before you begin:

Answer 2

-CC beginning script
-wash hands and put on gloves
-gather supplies
-check alignment on bed
-make sure wheelchair is next to bed (legs out of way and wheels locked)

Question 3

Assisting with sitting

Answer 3

-Check if C is safe distance from edge of bed
-Place one hand on hip and one on shoulder
-Roll c towards you (on to their side)
-Ask c to push up with arm on count of three while you move legs off mattress
-Check if C feels ok
-Have C sit towards end of bed until feet are flat on ground (with non slip shoes on)

Question 4

Put on transfer belt

-put belt around c wait (under ribs)
-feed metal end through teeth
-tighten until it’s snug and can fit hand in
-pull metal tip through other side of buckle and tuck extra into back of belt

Question 5

Standing with transfer belt

Answer 5

-stand in front of C
-put one leg on outside of C leg and other leg in between legs
-bend shoulders until you are level with C
-ask C to put hands on your shoulders
-put hands in belt with fingers pointing up
-ask C to move closer to edge of seat
-rock and stand on count of 3

Question 6

Pivot transfer

-ensure C is not dizzy
-pivot toward wheelchair
-ask if C can feel chair on back of leg
-ask C to place hand on arm of chair
-lower into chair on count of 3
-assist C to sit back in seat

Question 7

Assist C to destination

Answer 7

-ask if they’d like you to remove belt
-ask if they want seatbelt buckled
-put footrests down
-unlock and assist to destination
-ask if they want wheels locked once there

After you finish:

-check body position
-put supplies away
-remove gloves and wash hands
-cc items
-ending script
