define rate of reaction
the change in concentration of a reactant or product per unit time
whats zero order
when the conc. of a reactant has no effect on rate, the reaction is zero order with respect to the reactant.
zero order: rate ∝ [A]^0
in a zero order reaction:
- any number raised to the power of zero is 1
- concentration doesn’t influence the rate
state the graph in zero order
the graph shows rate of reaction doesn’t change with conc.
-this means the conc. has no effect on the rate of reaction, this is classified as zero order
-if zero order, the half life decreases with time
(zero order is a straight line graph (downwards))
whats first order
a reaction is first order with respect to the reactant when the rate depends on its conc. when raised to the power of 1
first order: rate ∝ [A]^1
in a first order reaction:
- if the conc. of A is doubles (x2), the reaction increases by a factor of 2^1=2
-if a conc. is tripled its 3^1=3
state the graph in first order
this graph shows rate does change when the conc. is changed.
-as the conc. halves, so does the rate of reaction, in first order half life is constant
(downwards sloping curve)
whats second order
-a reaction is second order with respect to a reactant when the rate depend on its conc raised to the power of 2.
second order: rate ∝ [A]^2
in a second order reaction:
-if the conc. of A is doubled (x2), the reaction rate increases by a factor of 2^2 =4
-if tripled, its 3^2= 9
state the graph in second order
this graph shows rate does change when conc. is changed.
as the conc. changes, the rate of reaction changes by that factor squared e.g. double the conc.= quadruple the rate.
in second order the half life increases!
