Transer Of Skill Flashcards
Definition of positive transfer?
When the learning and performance of one skill helps the learning and performance of another skill
Definition of negative transfer?
When the learning and performance of one skill hinders the learning and performance of another skill
Definition of bilateral transfer?
The transfer of learning from one limb to another
Definition of proactive transfer?
The influence of one skill on a skill yet to be performed
Definition of retroactive transfer?
The influence of one skill on the learning or performance of a skill that has been previously learned
When is positive transfer likely to take place?
- if the structure and context in which the skills are performed are similar to those used in teaching
- if the information processing requirements in practice are similar to the ones of the actual skill
What does the “identical elements theory” suggest?
That the greater the number of components of practice that are relevant to the “real” situation, the more likely positive transfer is to take place and future responses to be correct
What does the term “transfer-appropriate processing” mean?
The term is given to the idea that a new skill might be different from any skill performed before, but if the cognitive information processing requirements are similar then positive transfer could occur
What can the amount of positive transfer that takes place depend on?
Often depends on how well previously performed skills have been learned
If a skill is broken down into parts, each part must be learned through (part practice) before positive transfer can be maximised
Negative transfer is…
- rare
- mostly temporary
- mostly associated with the performer misunderstanding the movement requirements rather than having problems with movement control
When does negative transfer often occur?
When a familiar stimulus requires a new response, particularly if the demands of the new response are so similar to the old demands that the player becomes confused
What are motor programmes?
Generalised series of movements stored in the long-term memory and each is retrieved by a single decision e.g. A golf swing for an experienced golfer
What are the two ways bilateral transfer takes place?
- The ‘cognitive’ aspects of the skill
2. The motor programme is transferred
What does the ‘cognitive’ aspects of the skill involve?
Our understanding of what is required e.g a football player has an idea of how the non-preferred limb might operate
What is involved in the transfer of the motor programme in bilateral transfer?
The pattern of movement that is learned almost automatically for one limb is used subconsciously when the other limb is used
